Sessions

From Here Sessions are designed to create spaces of accompaniment. Life and faith can be really hard and really messy and can also be full of grace and joy. These sessions, hosted primarily through Zoom, seek to create environments where presenters and participants alike get a sense of community, hope, and encouragement.

LENTEN BOOK STUDY: A DIFFERENT KIND OF FAST

“Fasting as a religious act increases our sensitivity to that mystery always and everywhere present to us. It is a passageway into the world of spirit to explore its territory and bring back wisdom necessary for living a fulfilled life. It is an invitation to awareness, a call to compassion for the needy, a cry of distress and a song of joy. It is a discipline of self-restraint, a ritual of purification, and a sanctuary for offerings of atonement.” -Thomas Ryan from A Different Kind of Fast by Christine Valters Paintner featuring the art of Kreg Yingst.

Join us a Lenten From Here Session as we use A Different Kind of Fast as our guide in undertaking six weeks of various fasts.

Christine Valters Paintner’s offers unique fasts that meet many of us where we are, such as:

“An invitation to fast from Multitasking and Inattention and embrace Full Presence to the Moment” and “An invitation to Fast from Speed and Rushing and embrace Slowness and Pausing.”

Book Study participants can expect to read a short reflection/meditation once a week, then spend the week implementing that week’s fast (the author walks readers through various different contemplative prayer methods if participants would like to engage further, but these are not necessary). Participants will be invited to meet over zoom three times over Lent to discuss the type of fast and the outcomes/fruit of implementation.

Please note that the selected text is ecumenically based and seeks to reach a wide audience. Zoom sessions will use a Catholic lens from which to enter these fasts. There is no cost to participate. The book study outline, where to purchase the book and zoom links will be sent upon registration.
